| 1. Acute Respiratory Acidosis. A young adult woman with chronic depression was found shortly after becoming unconscious as a result of taking an overdose of barbiturates. Acid-base results are typical of a pure respiratory acidosis. There has been no time for metabolic compensation to develop. |
